Sexual Addiction
My first speciality is in the field of compulsive sexual behaviors, or sexual addiction as it is often known. I am an Associate Sexual Addiction Therapist through the Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals. Check them out at the link below. I treat sexual addiction through development of the sense of self. In my experience, I have found that addiction stems from unidentified and unexpressed emotions often due to traumatic life experiences, or perceived traumatic life experiences. Through processing these experiences and increasing emotional connection the brain and body is able to decrease the need for triggers and cravings for the addiction. This is the method I have utilized with most of my clients and have seen success as they overcome their addiction and reconnect with the people who are important to them, that they often have lost or grown isolated from because of their addiction.
Personality Disorders/Features
I began working with individuals with personality disorders during my time in residential treatment and I learned that what people often refer to as “personality disorders” are what I call “trait inflexiblity.” Often times people struggle to show up with the trait that is most helpful for them when it is necessary. For example, someone should show up extremely confident and powerful as a CEO at work but that confident and powerful demeanor at home is not necessary. This often leads to relationship struggles. It is my method to teach trait flexibility and allow other aspects of people’s personalities shine through for a healthier more rounded individual and healthier more appropriate relationships.
Couples Work
Couples work with me involves developing skills to learn your partner, learn yourself, and learn how to relate to each other. I also focus on the development of empathy and attempts to understand the perspective of your partner. In relationships with infidelity we focus on the development of accountability for the betraying partner and increasing emotional and physical safety for the betrayed partner.
Brainspotting
Brain spotting is a trauma modality designed to connect individuals with their emotional experience rather than keep them cognitively rationalized and discussing traumatic events. This modality is helpful in working with addiction as people that struggle with addition often struggle with rationalizing or avoiding their emotions. Brain spotting bypasses that rationalization and avoidance to allow the brain to process emotional experiences as necessary.
